Trivia

    Album

  • Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee had asked Lata Mangeshkar to compose the music for this film but Lata had refused. Later, when Salil Chowdhury was brought on board and finished recording the music, Lata Mangeshkar told the director that Salil da's music was so good that she was happy that she had refused his offer.[MR7]
  • Director Hrishikesh Mukherjee had initially envisioned Shashi Kapoor in the titular role on this 1970 classic. Shashi Kapoor apparently was only interested in romantic roles and declined the offer. Hrishikesh Mukherjee then thought of Raj Kapoor but dropped the idea because he couldn't imagine his close friend dying even on the screen. Kishore Kumar was also considered but it didn't work out due to a financial disagreement between him and Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This was also the reason why Kishore Kumar didn't sing any songs in the film. It was only then that the role went to Rajesh Khanna.[1]
  • Hrishikesh Mukheree had used his real-life friendship with Raj Kapoor to model the on-screen friendship between Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna in this film. He had even thought about casting Raj Kapoor in the role that was eventually played by Rajesh Khanna but instead ended up dedicating the film to his dear friend along with the city of Bombay.[2][MR12]

    Song

  • Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaye - Salil Chowdhury re-used his Bengali composition "Amay Proshno Kore" sung by Hemant Kumar, for this song.[3]
  • Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli - This classic Salil Chowdhury song almost did not happen. Another song in the film was accidentally given to both Yogesh and Gulzar. Eventually Yogesh's lyrics - "Naa ro ankhiyaaan" - remained unused since Hrishikesh Mukherjee had already planned to shoot the song with Gulzar's lyrics. To compensate Yogesh, the film makers decided to come up with a situation for a new song. It is in these circumstances that Yogesh wrote the lyrics to the film's most memorable song.[MR10]
  • Naa Jiya Laage Naa - Salil Chowdhury reused his Bengali composition "Na Mono Laage Na" sung by Lata Mangeshkar, for this song.[4]
  • Naa Jiya Laage Naa - There was much confusion around the lyrics of this song before the final version by Gulzar was chosen. While Salil Chowdhury had asked Yogesh to write the lyrics for this tune, director Hrishikesh Mukherjee had asked Gulzar to do the same. Eventually, Yogesh's "Naa ro ankhiyaan" was not used since Hrishikesh Mukherjee had already planned to shoot the song to Gulzar's lyrics.[MR10]
  • Naa Jiya Laage Naa - The tune for this iconic Salil Chowdhury song was originally planned for the unreleased film "Anand Mahal".[MR10]
