Trivia

    Album

  • This film took many years to complete. The original music director Ghulam Mohammad passed away during this period and Naushad was brought in to complete the remaining songs.
  • Work on this film started in 1956 but it was released only in 1971. Among the things that delayed the film were the marital issues encountered by filmmaker Kamal Amrohi and his leading lady Meena Kumari. Meena Kumari's alcoholism, treatment and recovery further delayed the film.[MR10]
  • Dharmendra was originally cast in the role that was eventually played by Raaj Kumar in this film. Dharmendra opted out of the film to defuse the rumours floating around about his "affair" with Meena Kumari.[1]

    Song

  • Inhi Logon Ne Le Leena Dupatta Mera - This popular Lata Mangeshkar song probably has folk origins. There were at least two other versions of this song in earlier Hindi films - one in "Himmat" (1941) and another in "Aabroo" (1943).[2][3]
  • Najariya Ki Maari - Naushad was taken aback to see the famous yesteryear singer Rajkumari when he was looking for chorus singers for Pakeezah. Seeing that she had fallen on hard times, Naushad decided to help her by giving her this song.
